Caldera Blanca is possibly the result of a hydromagmatic eruption, that is, lava came into contact with water during the eruption and created this volcanic cone. It is part of the III series, the eruptions that occurred before the most recent ones, and is one of the highest elevations in the centre of the island.
In the past, the interior of the crater was used for cultivation as the bed is relatively flat.
The name Caldera Blanca (“White Basin”) comes from the process of caliche being deposited on the surface of the volcano, this making it hard and giving it the characteristic white colour that makes it stand out in the landscape.
Trekking on a volcanic route in Lanzarote
Located in the centre of the island of Lanzarote, the Caldera Blanca route crosses ample volcanic badlands on a lava surface which resulted from the eruptions between 1730 and 1736. Its two central elements, Caldereta and Caldera Blanca, originate from two cones which were caused by previous volcanic eruptions. Caldera Blanca is one of the highest peaks in this volcanic range in the centre of the island.
A walk suitable for everybody
The walk along the Caldera Blanca route starts at Our Lady of Sorrows Church (la iglesia de los Dolores), home of the island’s patron saint. It is located on the northern fringe which marks the end of one of Timanfaya’s lava tongues, where a ten kilometre stretch starts, it is quite a flat area which combines pathways, tracks and tarred roads.
It is suitable for everybody, remember to wear suitable footwear and clothing and take sun cream and enough liquids for a three hour trek.
