Architecture in Lanzarote

The architecture on the island has been influenced by the climate. Most houses are painted white as it acts as a mirror reflecting the sunlight, maintaining a cool temperature inside.

The flat rooves and patios are slightly inclined in order to collect the scarce rainwater in stone tanks. These flat rooves are often decorated with typical hat-shaped forms or domes. Most doors and windows are painted in green because in the past, the fishermen used to use the same paint used for painting their boats. Traditional architecture has also a colonial influence.

Portuguese and Andalusian influences have also left their mark, creating an individual architectural style. Examples of this are wooden balconies which hang from the facade, inside patios and skylights which are typical of Teguise. The houses are usually very simple in style and decorated with pottery.
