Costa Teguise

Costa Teguise

Things to do - general

The municipality of Teguise, it is also home to the quiet tourist resort of Costa Teguise. This is a resort in which the original charm of the island has been carefully preserved thanks to the strict enforcement of a sustainable development policy that is imposed on Lanzarote´s tourist sector.

Costa Teguise offers all the services you would expect from a top quality tourist resort whilst deliberately avoiding the perils of overcrowding, unfriendly property developments and without falling into the trap of offering frivolous extravagances. One of the most important hotels is the Gran Meliá Salinas, the magnificent murals and architecture will tell you that you are somewhere special. A lagoon-shaped pool designed by local artist Cesar Manrique, located directly on the banks of the Atlantic facing Cucharas beach.

Sports & nature

Nautical Destination

The municipality of Teguise forms part of “Estaciones Náuticas de Lanzarote”, a brand awarded by the Spanish Nautical Resorts Association guaranteeing the quality of watersports in this destination.

In Teguise there is the opportunity to enjoy surfing, kiteboarding, stand up paddle surf, windsurf, bodyboarding, kite surf, paragliding, ala delta, sports fishing, scuba diving, snorkel, trekking and mountain bike excursions, golf and boat trips all year round. Within the town there are three clearly defined zones, each with its own special features, to really enjoy these sports in the midst of the unique lunar landscape in the volcanic environment of Lanzorote.

Costa Teguise is a good place to start for several cycling and trekking routes, or even to swim in the waters around it: either scuba diving or snorkelling. Las Cucharas Beach is ideal for windsurfing and every June it hosts a date on the Professional Windsurfers Association (PWA) world circuit.

Whether you want to ride the waves on a surf board or have a go at kitesurfing, stand up paddle surf, bodyboarding, paragliding and ala delta, the miles of sand along the Famara beach are simply spectacular. The subtropical climate of the Canary Islands keeps the average water temperature at around 20ºC and the constant wind makes this spot enviably unique.

The island of La Graciosa has no roads and crossing it by bike or on foot or trying a boat trip are highly recommendable ways of getting to know the only island that can be visited in the Chinijo Archipelago whose depths make up the largest marine reservation in Europe. The warm, transparent water hides many magical places for scuba diving.

Bodyboard

Bodyboard is the most minimal and natural way to catch waves, paddle in the ocean helped by fins and a small soft board is easy and enjoyable from the first day and now you can do it in Teguise in the Famara Beach.

Diving

The volcanic background and the clear waters make of Lanzarote a coveted destination for divers across the world. There are several spots where snorkel and diving can be practiced in Teguise, but it is in the Chinijo Archipelago where scuba diving lovers will find the most attractive areas.

70,000 ha of deep waters in total suround the Graciosa island, which together with the solid rocks of La Montaña Clara, Alegranza, Roque del Este and the Roque del Oeste make up Europe’s largest Marine reserve, where more tan 228 species live, along with a rich marine flora.

The especial diving magic that these spots have, like the Jameao de Alegranza protected area, where over 200 meters of anchors have created a very particular marine landscape, attract diviers all year round, since the waters are warm, their temperature always around 19 to 22 ºC.

Kitesurf

Other water sport which can be enjoyed in Teguise is the kitesurf. The long beach of Famara is the ideal spot for kitesurfing. It's both a great spot for beginners who can learn in all safety, and also a great spot for experts who crave wave which are available throughout the whole year.

Surf

Teguise’s municipality has one of the best spots to practise surf in Lanzarote island, where there is a high number of breakers which vary in difficulty, offering surf for all expertise levels. The quality of costa Oeaste’s waves is well known, such as the ones in “picos de Famara”, the “Caleta de Cabalo” or the Graciosa Island.

Famara is the perfect scenario for beginners just starting surf practise, but nearby, in Famara, there’s two spots, the “Muelle de Famara” and “San Juan”, where advanced surfers will find more extreme conditions. In fact, the breakers in San Juan host one of WQS’s phases. There you can find numerous specialised schools and shops.

Winter is the best season to surf, from November until the end of March, because at this stage, waves easily reach 1.5 to 4.5 of height. Due to the great climatic conditions all year long, water temperature is usually never under 19ºC, with an annual average of 22ºC. No other destination in Europe can offer such pleasant conditions to practise surf in high quality waves.

Windsurfing

Teguise have a great conditions for windsurfing. Pleasant temperatures, frequent trade winds, good facilities and several specialised schools along the coast can help you take your first steps or broaden your knowledge of this spectacular sport.

Las Cucharas Beach in Costa Teguise is the busiest spot for windsurfing and for many years has been a site for the PWA World Windsurfing Championship trials. You can also find windsurfing schools as well as all kinds of services, which makes this the best choice for windsurfing.

Golf

Golf has a centenary tradition in the Canary islands, rooting from the commercial relationship between the island’s natives with the British Islands, in fact, several golf courses in the archipelago are prepared to hold international tournaments.

Teguise’s always warm climatic conditions make of the municipality a destination where practising this sport becomes a unique experience. Lanzarote has three golf courses, one of them in Teguise. Its location, in the slope of an old volcano makes of “Costa Teguise Golf” the most singular course in the island, according to Severiano Ballesteros, the best designer in the Canary Islands.

It was the famous John Harris who signed the design in 1978, playing with the volcanic landscape in the development of the 18 hole course. The course has over 3500 palm trees is situated at the bottom of an old volcano and has spectacular views of the Atlantic sea.

Hiking

Lanzarote’s volcanic nature imprints a magical stamp to the island, which is ideal for trekking and to go on excursions. Its complex geography allows covering paths across inactive craters, natural parks and gullies, all of it by the Atlantic Ocean.

Chinijo Archipelago was declared Biosphere Reserve in 1993 by the UNESCO, and over 40% of its surface is a natural protected area.

But it is probably the Graciosa Island that hides more enchantment for those who want to practice trekking. In la Graciosa, asphalt is unknown and its sand paths are ideal to walk. It is worth going up the mustard color high hill of the peculiar Montaña Amarilla (Yellow Mountain) and find a spot to rest in one of its numerous virgin coves.

If you don’t dare to try i ton your own, there are several specialised businesses in active tourism around the area that organise excursions with various levels of difficulty and multilingual guide.

Mountain Bike

Lanzarote has a large quantity of natural resources and mixed with its complex geography, it is an ideal environment to practise mountain bike.

Lanzarote has 247 kms and 3.500 metres of ramps, in the form of paths, roads and trails for mountain bikes. Ramps are never over 600 meters, and generally they do not surpass 200 meters. The fact that Lanzarote is largely made of natural protected areas, means your ties will not touch concrete, but will rather go through volcanoes, vineyards, La Graciosa Island, el Risco de Famara amongst others.

Specialised businesses organise excursions and routes according to the group’s level of expertise and the island’s wind conditions. Due to the average yearly temperature of 22ºC Lanzarote is the perfect destination to practise mountain bike all year long.

Nightlife

Without a doubt, Costa Teguise clearly shows the excellent quality of the tourism offer here, where every last detail is taken care of to make sure that our visitors enjoy every minute of their stay.

After nightfall, too, the fun is guaranteed, and there are many places to have a drink or dance to some really great music. Lovely terraces, lively bars and bustling nightclubs are the perfect destinations for those looking to have fun and enjoy a night out. The areas with the best nightlife are, mainly, Costa Teguise, Villa de Teguise and Nazaret.

Culture and history info

Teguise is one of the seven municipalities Lanzarote island is divided into nowadays, and it is without a doubt the one that enjoys the richest history and traditions. Lanzarote was the first island in the Canary Islands archipelago to be explored by European seafarers, probably because it is the northernmost of the islands and the closest to the continent.

Between 1320 and 1339, the Italian seafarer Lancelotto Malocello arrived at Lanzarote and gave it his name. In 1402, the Frenchman Jean de Béthencourt arrived and defeated Guadarfía, the Guanche king, or Mencey, of the island. And so Lanzarote became the first annexed island of the Kingdom of Castile, coming under its rule and vassalage.

What we know of today as the Real Villa de Teguise stands above the Gran Aldea of the majos of Lanzarote (the former inhabitants of the island) which according to Viera y Clavijo, was called "Acatife" by the natives. The place received the name of Teguise in honour of Princess Teguise, King Guadarfía's daughter and married to Maciot de Béthencourt's, Jean de Béthencourt's nephew.

The city enjoyed prosperity and rapid economic growth, which made it the target of numerous attacks by pirates, privateers and criminals during the 16th and 17th centuries.
